Tartan Twist, developed by sisters Lyndsey Bowditch and Gillian Crawford, began on a windswept October holiday in the Highlands. Inspired by their love of Scotland, their vision was to create a range of luxurious and affordable gifts.
First love
We both love tartan – the colours, the inventiveness of the designs, the fact that tartan is ageless and appeals across the board. When we trialled our first collection it was an instant hit. Most of our jewellery is made in Scotland in our lovely arts and crafts studio near Stirling Castle, and our adult sterling silver jewellery is hallmarked by the Edinburgh Assay Office.
Our evolution
We design pieces which we love and which we wear. Winning Best Scottish Product at our launch in January 2008 was a huge boost, as was being selected as The Next Bestseller by the Conran Shop, Paris, later that year.
Girl power
With five daughters between us (and one son), there was big pressure to design a range for children and so Teeny Tartan Twist was born. We use the same quality of materials in our children's as in our adult jewellery, including freshwater pearls and sterling silver. We don’t use elastic, so all our children's bracelets come with a detachable extension chain which allows them to grow with the child.
A little help from our friends
Establishing Tartan Twist has been a fantastic adventure but we couldn't have done it without the help and support of husbands, friends, parents, kids and lovers (only joking, boys).
Scottish Enterprise has identified us as a high growth company and given their support. John, Chris, Keith, Stewart, Scott and Fiona have been endlessly encouraging. To all of them, and to our gorgeous model Rebecca, a big tartan thank you.
